RSU/Livonia women's team gains valuable international experience at Copenhagen 7s tournament

On 8–9 August, the RSU/Livonia women’s rugby team competed in the international Copenhagen 7s tournament in Denmark. The tournament brought together teams from around the world, with RSU/Livonia finishing 11th out of 28 teams and gaining valuable international match experience.

Women’s team manager Evija Kralliša and club president Vigo Valdavs also travelled to Copenhagen with the team. The tournament provided an opportunity not only to test the team against strong opponents, but also to assess its current performance and identify areas for further development.

‘This is an international tournament with strong teams, so playing against them was very valuable. The first day could have gone better – the girls lack match experience this season. There has only been one round of the Latvian championship, and without enough match experience, it takes time for the team to find its rhythm. With more experience, the players would also feel more confident on the pitch,’ Valdavs said after the tournament.

The team significantly improved its performance on the second day, winning two matches and putting up a strong fight against one of the tournament finalists.

‘The second day was more successful – we won two matches and played very well against one of the finalists. We finished 11th out of 28 teams – not bad! The most valuable part was seeing and understanding what we need to do, how we need to do it and what level we should aim for,’ Valdavs emphasised.

Competing in the Copenhagen 7s gave the team valuable international match experience, an opportunity to assess its level against strong opponents and a clearer understanding of what it needs to work on during the remainder of the season.

On 5 September, the RSU/Livonia players will continue their campaign in the Latvian Women’s Rugby Sevens Championship.
